Depuis le début des années 1980, Nedko Solakov (né en 1957 à Tcherven Briag, Bulgarie, vit à Sofia) adopte une posture critique, ironique et humoristique à l'égard de son vécu, utilisant la peinture, la photographie, le dessin, la vidéo et la performance, et l'écrit. Ses textes relèvent d’un juste mélange entre critique et naïveté, burlesque et mélancolie, autobiographie et universalité.

Some Newly-Born Utopias présente de courts récits réalisés à même le mur, autour et en fonction des caractéristiques de l’espace d’exposition. Nedko Solakov crée des univers dans lesquels il mélange plusieurs formes de réalité où s'affrontent des systèmes de représentations politiques et esthétiques. L'Encyclopedia Utopia réalisée en 1990 et présentée au Tri postal, fait allusion à l’échec d'un système politique totalitaire. Le projet de Nedko Solakov à artconnexion interroge, avec presque vingt ans de recul, l’idée même d'utopie aujourd'hui : une invitation à entrer dans un monde poétique qui témoigne de situations parfois tragi-comiques, souvent absurdes et sombres, basées sur l’observation méticuleuse des travers humains.

En avril 1997, Nedko Solakov a présenté « By the way », un projet in-situ pour artconnexion au 10-12 rue du Priez.

Nedko Solakov a régulièrement exposé en Europe et aux Etats-Unis. Son travail a été présenté à l’Aperto 93 (Biennale de Venise) ; les 48ème, 50ème et 52ème Biennale de Venise pour laquelle il reçoit la mention « Honourable Mention to an artist exhibited in the central international exhibition »; les 3ème, 4ème et 9ème Biennale d’Istanbul ; Sao Paulo 94 ; la Manifesta 1, Rotterdam ; la 2nd et 4ème Biennale de Gwangju (Corée) ; la 5ème Biennale de Lyon ; Sonsbeek 9, Arnhem (Pays-Bas) ; la 4ème et 5ème Biennale de Cetinje (Monténégro) ; la 1ère Biennale de Lodz (Pologne) ; la 7ème Biennale de Sharjah (Emirats Arabes) ; la 3ème Biennale de Tirana (Albanie) ; la 2nd  Biennale de Séville ; la 2nd Biennale de Moscou ; la Documenta 12 ; la 16ème Biennale de Sydney, et Prospect 1, Biennale de Nouvelle-Orléans.

Récemment plusieurs musées ont consacré une exposition personnelle à l’artiste : Museu do Chiado, Lisbonne; Stichting De Appel, Amsterdam; CCA Kitakyushu, Japon; Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid, The Israël Museum, Jérusalem; Centre d’Art Santa Monica, Barcelone et Kunsthaus Zurich.

Entre 2003 et 2005, période de production intensive de l’artiste, « A 12/13 (and even more) Year Survey » a été présentée au Casino Luxembourg, Rooseum, Malmoe et O.K Centrum, Linz.

En 2008-2009, le projet « Emotions » a été exposé au Kunstmuseum à Bonn, Kunstmuseum à St Gallen, et au Mathildenhoehe, Darmstadt. D’autres projets sont en cours au Castello di Rivoli, Rivoli ; Ikon Gallery, Birmingham ; au S.M.A.K., Gand et à la Fundação de Serralves, Porto.

Since the beginning of the 1980's, Nedko Solakov, (born 1957, Tcherven Briag, Bulgaria, lives in Sofia) has adopted a critical, ironic and humorous attitude towards his lived experience with painting, photography, drawing, video, performance and writing. His texts are a knowing mix of criticism and naivety, burlesque and melancholy, autobiographical and universal.

Some Newly-Born Utopias presents short stories directly on the wall, around and in relation to the characteristics of the project space. Nedko Solakov creates worlds in which several levels of reality overlap and where systems of political and aesthetical representations are confronted. The artwork Encyclopedia Utopia created in 1990 (and presented in the XXL exhibition at the Tri Postal, Lille), hinted at the failure of the totalitarian political system. With the hindsight of almost twenty years, Nedko Solakov's project at artconnexion muses on the very notion of Utopia: an invitation to enter a poetical environment and engage with hopes and aspirations, with funny and often absurd situations - based on his meticulous observation of human foibles.

Nedko Solakov has exhibited extensively in Europe and the United States. Recently he had solo shows at Museu do Chiado, Lisbon; Stichting De Appel, Amsterdam; CCA Kitakyushu, Japan; Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid, The Israel Museum, Jerusalem; Centre d’Art Santa Monica, Barcelona and Kunsthaus Zurich. In 2003-2005 an extensive mid-career "A 12 1/3 (and even more) Year Survey" was presented at Casino Luxembourg, Rooseum Malmoe and O.K Centrum Linz, and in 2008-2009 the “Emotions” solo project was exhibited at Kunstmuseum Bonn, Kunstmuseum St Gallen, and Mathildenhoehe, Darmstadt. Among his forthcoming projects are solo exhibitions at Castello di Rivoli, Rivoli; Ikon Gallery, Birmingham; S.M.A.K., Ghent and Fundação de Serralves, Porto.
