La commande : Sans un regain d’intérêt pour le métier de colombophile par les nouvelles générations, une tradition est vouée à disparaître. Le maintien du pigeon voyageur comme mode de communication naturelle vaut pourtant comme défi au regard des technologies contemporaines. Afin d’encourager de nouvelles vocations tout en préservant la qualité d’un élevage réputé, l’association colombophile de Beauvois-en-Cambrésis souhaite commander à un artiste contemporain un nouveau prototype de pigeonnier sachant allier esthétique, fonctionnalité et dimension pédagogique. Cette initiative trouve un écho favorable parmi les responsables de la Base de loisirs de Caudry, engagés dans le vaste projet de recréer un environnement naturel (espèces naturelles, zone lagunaire, réserve écologique) disparu à la suite d’une pratique trop intensive de l’agriculture dans le Cambrésis. Il convient de multiplier les activités locales afin d’attirer le public et de donner un nouvel essor à la région. Accueillir le pigeonnier dans la base de loisirs contribue à valoriser le site, par la participation aux concours d’élevage, l’ouverture à la création contemporaine et la découverte d’une tradition.

L’artiste : En faisant appel à un artiste-designer et non pas à un artiste-plasticien, le médiateur fit un choix original qui plut aux commanditaires. Après avoir travaillé en collaboration avec Philippe Starck pendant cinq ans, Matali Crasset ouvre sa propre agence en 1998. La ville de Paris lui remet en 1997 le « Grand Prix du design ». Designer-industriel, sa pratique repose sur l’écoute de la demande de l’autre, ses objets conjuguent esthétique et fonctionnalité. Accepter la commande d’un prototype de pigeonnier se situe dans le droit fil de ses recherches, tout en lui offrant la possibilité de se confronter à un contexte pour elle inédit, un contexte naturel, local. Afin de répondre à cette proposition avec le maximum d’efficacité, elle adopta un mode de travail qui lui est spécifique. Plutôt que de présenter un seul projet aux commanditaires, elle en présenta deux, du plus simple au plus complexe. Suivant l’évolution des échanges, elle peut ainsi agir à l’instar d’un « curseur ». Le projet le plus évolué fut choisi d’emblée, ce qui la surprit. Les designers des années 90, dont Crasset est un leader, souhaitent par ailleurs démocratiser le design, loin des propositions épurées et radicalement esthétiques de la génération précédente. La procédure des Nouveaux Commanditaires lui permet de conforter cette prise de position.

La réalisation : Soucieuse dans ses créations d’allier tradition et modernité, Crasset conçoit une forme en capsule pour le prototype, en référence aux pigeonniers de la haute antiquité égyptienne. La structure interne, à partir de laquelle peut s’organiser la mise en place des différents espaces fonctionnels, évoque celle d’un arbre, reposoir naturel des volatiles, axis mundi reliant terre et ciel. La coque externe, enveloppe protectrice entre intérieur et extérieur, laisse présager d’un univers secret à découvrir, invitation pour le public à entrer dans cette architecture inédite. Forme simple et colorée, la capsule se détache nettement sur l’espace où elle se déploie sur une hauteur de plus de six mètres. Surélevée, comme en suspension, elle évoque l’idée de départ, l’envol, forme aérodynamique évocatrice d’un univers futuriste et ludique, support pour l’imaginaire s’abandonnant au monde des pigeons voyageurs.

The commission : Unless there is a resurgence of interest in pigeon fancying among new generations, a tradition is destined to disappear. Keeping carrier pigeons as a means of natural communication is nonetheless a challenge in the face of contemporary technologies. In order to encourage new people to take up the hobby, while at the same time preserving the quality of a renowned breeding stock, the Beauvois pigeon fanciers' association wished to commission a contemporary artist to design a new prototype pigeon loft which would combine aesthetic appeal, functionality and a pedagogic dimension. This initiative met with a favourable reception from those in charge of the Caudry leisure base, engaged on the huge enterprise of recreating a natural environment (native species, lagoon zone, ecological reserve) which has disappeared as a result of over-intensive farming in Cambrésis. It seems appropriate to bring together as many local activities as possible to attract the public and give the region a new boost. Having the pigeon loft on the leisure base will contribute towards enhancing the value of the site, through participation in breeding competitions, openness to contemporary creative work and the discovery of a tradition.

The Artist : By calling on an artist-designer and not a fine artist, the mediator made an original choice and one which appealed to the patrons. After working in collaboration with Philippe Starck for five years, Matali Crasset opened her own practice in 1998. In 1997 the city of Paris awarded her the Grand Prix du design. As an industrial designer, her work is based on listening to other people's requirements, and her designs combine aesthetic appeal and functionality. Accepting the commission for a prototype pigeon loft is directly in line with her research and experiments, at the same time as affording her an opportunity to deal with a context she is unfamiliar with: a natural, local context. To respond to the brief as effectively as possible, she adopted a method of work that is specific to her. Rather than presenting a single scheme to the patrons, she presented them with two, one simpler, the other more complex. Depending on how the exchange of ideas develops, she can thus act in the manner of a cursor. The more elaborate scheme was chosen straight away, to her surprise. Moreover the designers of the Nineties, of whom Crasset is a leading member, wish to democratise design, moving well away from streamlined, radically aesthetic proposals put up by the previous generation. The New Patrons procedure is enabling her to consolidate that stance.

Implementation : Keen to ally tradition and modernity in what she creates, Crasset designed a capsule shape for the prototype, referring to the pigeon lofts recorded from the early days of Ancient Egypt. The internal structure, from which the positioning of the various functional spaces can be organized, is reminiscent of that of a tree, the natural resting place of winged creatures, an axis mundi linking earth and sky. The external shell, a protective envelope between interior and exterior, hints at a secret world to be discovered, inviting the public to enter into this extraordinary architecture. The capsule, a simple, coloured form, stands out clearly against the space where it has been installed, extending over a height of more than six metres. At a raised height, as if in suspension, it evokes the idea of departure, flight: an aerodynamic shape evoking a futuristic, playful universe, a medium for flights of fancy relating to the world of carrier pigeons.
